For approximately two to three weeks in late April and May, the floors of ancient deciduous woodland across Cambridgeshire are covered in a carpet of native English bluebells — a purple-blue haze that has no equivalent in nature. It creates light, colour, and atmosphere that cannot be replicated at any other time of year.

Bluebell sessions require specific knowledge to do well and without damaging the flowers. I work in locations where access is possible without treading on the colony, at times when the morning light through the canopy is at its most beautiful. Sessions fill completely, usually within hours of booking opening.

Children instinctively explore bluebell woodland — crouching to look, picking carefully, running through clearings. Natural curiosity produces the most genuine photographs.

Short window makes them rare

The narrow seasonal window means bluebell images are genuinely rare. Families who return every spring build a record of childhood that is visually distinctive and irreplaceable.

When do bluebell sessions run?+

Typically late April to mid-May, timed to peak bluebell colour in Cambridgeshire woodland. The exact window varies by a week or two depending on the year’s weather. I monitor conditions carefully and confirm timing once I’m confident of peak colour.

Do you publish the location?+

No — bluebell woodland is permanently damaged by heavy footfall, and sharing GPS coordinates publicly causes real harm. Location details are confirmed privately with booked clients only. I only photograph in locations where I’m confident our presence won’t cause damage.

What time do sessions run?+

Primarily morning sessions — 7:30am, 8:30am, and 9:30am slots. Morning light through the woodland canopy is the best light of the year. Some late-afternoon slots may be available at locations that face west.

What should we wear?+

Spring pastels, soft greens, lilac, dusty blue, cream, and warm white all work beautifully against the purple-blue of bluebells. Avoid very loud colours and black, which absorbs light in woodland. Wellies or waterproof boots are strongly recommended — woodland in April is invariably damp.

How early should I book?+

The waitlist for spring bluebell sessions typically opens in February. I take approximately 20 sessions each spring and they fill completely, often on the day booking opens. Being on the waitlist is essentially the only reliable way to secure a spot.

Bluebell photography sessions require both a photographer who understands the specific challenges of shooting in dappled woodland light and a booking system that allows for last-minute scheduling flexibility as the bloom approaches peak.

Yana Skakun Photography runs a limited number of bluebell portrait sessions each spring at carefully scouted woodland locations in Cambridgeshire and the surrounding counties. Session numbers are kept deliberately small to protect the habitat and ensure unhurried access to the best spots. The waitlist opens in February and fills quickly each year.

Booking opens in February each year. Early waitlist registration guarantees first access to session slots before public booking opens. Sessions are offered at peak bloom timing based on that year’s conditions, with 48–72 hours’ notice. Waiting list members receive direct email notification ahead of public release.
