Moody, atmospheric, and dramatically romantic. For couples who find beauty in shadow, drama, and the darker end of the aesthetic spectrum.
Dark wedding photography is a broad category that encompasses everything from goth and metal weddings to simply couples who prefer deep colour palettes, candlelit interiors, dramatic architectural venues, and portraits that use shadow as a compositional tool rather than trying to eliminate it.
Most wedding photographers are trained to maximise light — to shoot in the brightest part of the venue, to fire fill flash in shadows, to deliver bright, airy galleries. I'm equally comfortable at the other end of the spectrum, and I find dark, moody imagery frequently more honest and atmospheric than the alternative.
All-black dress codes, deep burgundy and plum florals, forest green, midnight blue — colour palettes that reject the conventional white-and-pastel norm.
Candlelight ceremonies, low-lit reception halls, chiaroscuro portrait opportunities — I work with darkness rather than fighting it.
Ruined abbeys, Victorian churches, baronial halls, castle great rooms — venues with genuine historical weight and architectural drama.
Storm-lit countryside, winter woodland, moody coastline — nature in its less-controlled, more dramatic moods.
