Bolton sits at the edge of two remarkable landscapes: the flat Lancashire plain stretching west to the coast, and the wild West Pennine Moors rising immediately to the east and north. Rivington Country Park — Lord Leverhulme's extraordinary Victorian hill garden just minutes from the M61 — is one of Greater Manchester's finest outdoor family destinations. The terraced gardens, woodland, and Pigeon Tower folly offer an extraordinary variety of settings in a single afternoon.

My approach to family photography is entirely relaxed. Children lead and I follow — finding the real moments rather than constructing them. Bolton's locations naturally support this: children explore the Smithills Hall grounds, run up the Rivington hillside, and throw stones at the Jumbles reservoir shoreline. These moments become the photographs.

West of Bolton towards the coast, the light at golden hour sweeps in from the Irish Sea across the Lancashire plain. At Rivington Pike summit, on a clear evening in summer, you can watch the sun descend over the Fylde Coast — an extraordinary setting for family portraits.

What are the best family photography locations near Bolton?+

Rivington Country Park is my top recommendation — the Victorian terraced gardens climb the hillside above Lever Park and offer an extraordinary variety of settings: formal garden terraces, woodland paths, a ruined summerhouse, the Pigeon Tower folly, and open grassland with panoramic views. For something wilder and more dramatic, the West Pennine Moors above Belmont are stunning in late summer when the heather blooms.

Is Smithills Hall good for a family session?+

Smithills Hall is a genuinely remarkable location. The black-and-white timber-framed manor front dates to the 14th century and gives a very unusual backdrop. Behind and above the hall, the country park extends onto open moorland — so you can have a heritage architectural setting and wild moor within the same session. Children love exploring the grounds.

Can sessions include the West Pennine Moors?+

Yes — I photograph on the West Pennine Moors regularly. The moorland above Belmont reservoir, the Anglezarke section of Rivington, and the Winter Hill viewpoint area are all excellent for family photography. Late August sessions when the heather is fully in bloom are some of the most beautiful of the year — the purple-pink moorland under a blue or dramatic sky is unforgettable.

Do you cover Horwich, Westhoughton, and surrounding areas?+

Yes — I cover the whole of the Bolton district plus Horwich, Westhoughton, Farnworth, Little Lever, and into the Chorley and Wigan borders. Travel within 25 miles of Bolton is included in session fees.

What season is best for Bolton family photography?+

Each season has its character in this landscape. Spring brings fresh green on the moors and bluebells in the Smithills woodland. Summer golden hour at Rivington (sunset over the Irish Sea coast to the west) is exceptional. Autumn turns the moors warm ochre and brown. Winter at Jumbles or Smithills with frost and bare branches has a quiet, intimate quality that photographs beautifully.
