A family that moves from the Barbican to a Victorian terrace in Barnsbury because they value their neighbourhood. That reads to their children and takes them to the farmers' market and the Saturday morning parkrun. That works hard but is protective of the few hours each week when they are all together.
These are the families I most love to photograph, because they already have the material. They already have genuine warmth and real moments and the kind of easy laughter that doesn't need manufacturing. My work is simply to be present, to wait for those moments and to document them with care.
I work throughout Islington — at Highbury Fields, where the spring blossom is extraordinary and children have space to run; at Barnard Park, where the community garden provides warmth and texture; at the Georgian squares of Canonbury, where the architecture adds quiet grandeur; and at home, where the real family always lives.

Highbury Fields
Islington's largest green space — 29 acres of open meadow, mature trees and tennis courts. The northern woodland section offers beautiful dappled light in spring and summer. The wide southern meadow is perfect for children to run freely while family portraits are captured.
Barnard Park & Thornhill Square
A classic Victorian neighbourhood park with a community garden, adventure playground and a beautiful lime avenue. The surrounding Barnsbury and Thornhill conservation area streets add a quintessentially Islington architectural backdrop.
Canonbury Square & Gardens
One of London's finest Georgian garden squares, Canonbury Square's walled gardens are open to residents but the surrounding streets and the adjacent tower gardens offer extraordinary period character. The light on autumn afternoons is exceptional.
Regent's Canal (Angel to Islington Tunnel)
The canal between Angel and Hackney passes through a tranquil urban stretch with community gardens, narrowboats and weeping willows. The towpath between City Road Lock and the Islington Tunnel is particularly atmospheric.

Which is the best park for family photography in Islington?

For most families I recommend Highbury Fields — it's large enough for variety, with open meadow for children, woodland edges for dappled light, and a relaxed atmosphere that allows sessions to breathe. Barnard Park and the Canonbury Square area are better for smaller families who want more intimate, neighbourhood-feel pictures. I'll advise specifically based on your family and the season.
Do you photograph in-home family sessions in Islington?

Yes — and I love them. The morning light in Islington's Victorian and Georgian terraces (particularly in homes with north or east-facing kitchen areas) is extraordinary. I arrive, have a brief look around, and photograph what your family actually does in the morning — breakfast, children's playing, adults with coffee. These feel completely genuine because they are.
How do you work with very young children (under 2)?

I never rush. For babies and toddlers, the session follows their rhythm entirely. I start with quiet arrival, observe what catches their attention and follow them. I've found that the most beautiful images of young children emerge when they have genuinely forgotten the photographer is there — which takes a few minutes of patient waiting. I always allow extra time for young families.
What should we wear for an Islington family session?

Co-ordinated but not matching. Choose a colour palette of 2–3 tones that complement each other — muted earth tones, navy and white, soft neutrals. Avoid logo-heavy clothing and very bright, single-solid colours (they distract from faces). Can you photograph an extended or multi-generational family in Islington?

Absolutely. Grandparents, aunts, cousins, toddlers and teenagers all together — these are some of my most cherished projects. I need 90–120 minutes minimum for groups of 8+. Highbury Fields works well for larger groups due to its scale. I ask for a brief family outline in advance to plan the session structure.
