East London Family Photography
Hackney has one of London's most distinctive concentrations of young families — drawn to the borough by its parks, its community, its independent character and its green spaces that are among the finest in inner London. London Fields, Victoria Park, Clissold Park, Springfield Park, the Regent's Canal towpath, Hackney Marshes: the borough has an extraordinary range of natural settings within easy reach of most Hackney addresses, and these spaces provide the backdrop for family photography that feels genuinely rooted in the neighbourhood where your family lives.
My approach to family photography in Hackney is entirely unposed. I don't ask children to stand still, smile at the camera, or perform. Instead I create the conditions for them to be themselves — exploring, playing, interacting with you — and photograph from that natural activity. The resulting images are full of energy, personality and genuine emotion. They look like your family, not a stock photograph of someone else's.
Sessions typically begin with a relaxed warmup period while children adjust to having a camera present (usually 10–15 minutes of gentle activity is enough), then unfold at their pace. I direct parents only minimally — suggesting things to do with the children rather than how to stand or what expression to hold. By the end of a 90-minute session in London Fields or Victoria Park, most children have completely forgotten I'm there, and these are the photographs families treasure most.
I photograph families across all of Hackney — London Fields, Victoria Park, Clissold Park, Broadway Market, Dalston, Stoke Newington, Homerton, Clapton and Hackney Wick. I also work in adjacent areas including Islington, Bethnal Green, Bow, Stratford and Springfield Park. For families who want a more documentary home + outdoors session, the Family Story package combines interior home photography with a park session for the most varied and intimate gallery.
Where I Photograph
Hackney's beloved park — wild, open and beautifully unmanicured. The elm avenues, lido area and bandstand are photogenic in every season. Best in spring blossom and golden autumn mornings.
One of London's greatest Victorian parks — the lake, the Chinese pagoda, the formal rose garden and the Long Walk create a grand, spacious setting for family portraits with young children.
The canal towpath running east through Hackney offers a quiet linear setting — barge reflections, weeping willows and the low bridges create intimate, layered compositions for family photography.
The Victorian park in Stoke Newington with its fallow deer, walled garden and ponds — particularly beautiful in autumn when the horse chestnuts turn. Quieter than London Fields and Victoria Park.
The park on the hillside above the River Lea — terraced gardens, meadow slopes and views across the Lea Valley wetlands create a more naturalistic setting than the formal Victorian parks.
Favourite family sessions often begin at home — getting the children ready, morning routines, playing in the garden or kitchen. These documentary home segments create the most personal photographs.
