Lydiard Park · Coate Water · Avebury · The Ridgeway
Swindon sits at the edge of an extraordinary landscape: the Marlborough Downs, the Ridgeway National Trail, Savernake Forest, and the ancient standing stones of Avebury are all within 20 minutes of the city centre. Few towns in England have such immediate access to open chalk downland, prehistoric monuments, and genuinely wild sky.
Lydiard Park — 260 acres of Georgian parkland on Swindon's western edge — is the finest city-side location, offering formal gardens, mature woodland, and open meadow in one continuous session. But the most memorable Swindon family sessions tend to be further out: on the Ridgeway as the sky opens to the entire width of the Vale of White Horse, or at Avebury where your family can move freely around a stone circle 4,500 years in the making.
I photograph with patience and a quiet eye — letting the children lead, finding the real moments, making photographs that feel genuinely of this place and this season.

Lydiard Park is the most accessible — 260 acres of Georgian parkland on the city's western edge with enough variety (formal gardens, woodland, open parkland, the mansion itself) to fill a full extended session. For something more characterful and truly Wiltshire, Avebury or the Ridgeway are exceptional — the ancient stone circle and the Marlborough Downs offer a scale and quality of light found nowhere else in the region.
Yes — Avebury is one of my favourite family portrait locations in the South of England. The prehistoric standing stones in the open downland village are completely accessible, genuinely awe-inspiring, and entirely unique. The light across the chalk grassland at golden hour is extraordinary. Children find the huge stones fascinating and often naturally interact with them in ways that make wonderful photographs.
The Ridgeway itself is a wide, flat chalk track along the ridge — manageable for young children and pushchairs in dry conditions. The most accessible access points near Swindon are at Barbury Castle and Hackpen Hill. Both have easy parking and give immediate access to open downland with sweeping views.
Yes — I cover all of North Wiltshire including Swindon, Marlborough, Chippenham, Calne, Devizes, and the Kennet Valley. Sessions across Wiltshire are available with travel included within 25 miles of Swindon.
Lydiard Park and Coate Water are beautiful year-round. The Ridgeway and the Marlborough Downs are at their finest in late summer (July-August) when the chalk downland is warm and golden, and in early autumn. Avebury is photogenic in every season and especially atmospheric in mist or low winter sun. Spring brings blossom and bluebells to Savernake Forest.
