The ideal time is 28–34 weeks of pregnancy. For Bolton's locations, late summer (August–September) is outstanding — the West Pennine heather is in bloom and the evening light at Rivington, sweeping west towards the Irish Sea, is extraordinarily warm. Spring at Leverhulme Park (April–May) with the rose garden beginning and fresh green everywhere is also excellent.

Rivington is one of the finest outdoor session locations in the North West. Lord Leverhulme's hillside terraced gardens climb from Lever Park to the Pigeon Tower folly — a sequence of garden rooms, woodland paths, and open terraces with panoramic views. For maternity photography, the combination of formal garden settings at lower levels and open moorland views higher up gives remarkable variety within a single location.

The West Pennine Moors above Belmont are wild, open moorland — heather, rough grass, and the large reservoirs reflecting the Lancashire sky. In late August when the heather blooms, the moorland turns purple-pink and the long evening light makes the landscape glow. It is a completely different character to a park session — more elemental, more dramatic. The photographs have a very distinctive West Yorkshire and Lancashire quality.
