Portsmouth and Southsea are built almost entirely on Portsea Island — a dense, flat landscape of Victorian and Edwardian streets that run close to the sea. The coastal light here is exceptional: soft, bright, and constantly shifting as it reflects between sea and sky. Generous bay windows in the Southsea and Milton terraces fill rooms with this light throughout the day, while the Edwardian suburbs of Cosham, Drayton, and Paulsgrove catch long afternoon light through their wide, south-facing windows.

Newborn lifestyle photography works with what is already there in your home. The particular quality of light in a Portsmouth terrace, the view through a window to a suburban garden, the textures of a lived-in family home — these are the details I look for to frame the real moments of your first days together.

Southsea & Victorian seaside terraces

Southsea and Milton have some of the most beautiful Victorian and Edwardian terrace streets on the south coast — generous bay windows, bright south-facing rooms, and the particular quality of coastal light that bounces from sea to sky. These homes make wonderful newborn photography settings.

Gentle and responsive documentary style

I photograph what is actually happening — not what looks tidy or posed. Skin-to-skin moments, first feeds, the weight of a sleeping baby on a parent's chest — captured with natural light and no artificial interference.

Your whole family

Siblings, partners, grandparents on the day — all welcome. The chaos of early days with older children is one of the most photographically rich parts of these sessions.

What areas of Portsmouth and Hampshire do you cover for newborn photography?+

I cover all of Portsmouth and Southsea, plus the surrounding Hampshire area including Gosport, Fareham, Havant, Waterlooville, Emsworth, and into the Isle of Wight (ferry surcharge may apply). I also cover Chichester and surrounding West Sussex villages. Travel within 20 miles of Portsmouth is included in standard fees.

When is the best age for an in-home newborn session?+

The first two weeks of life are the most photographically rich — babies are still curled and sleepy, and settle easily in your arms. I'm happy to photograph up to around six weeks old for lifestyle sessions; the images are different but equally beautiful.

What does a newborn lifestyle session look like?+

I arrive and spend a few minutes getting to know your home and where the light is best. We then just carry on with normal life — you feed, settle, change, cuddle — and I document it with minimal direction. Most families are surprised by how relaxed it feels and how little they notice me after the first few minutes.

Do I need to prepare anything special?+

Warm the house a little so the baby is comfortable, have milk ready, and that's it. You don't need props, matching outfits, or a tidy home. I work naturally around real living spaces.
