Godmanchester is one of the most photographically attractive small towns in Cambridgeshire — a Roman settlement (Durovigutum) with an uninterrupted medieval street plan, the famous Chinese Bridge, and Port Holme Meadow, one of England's largest historic hay meadows, immediately adjacent to the town. For families, couples, and anyone who wants a genuinely beautiful natural setting without travelling far from the Huntingdon area, Godmanchester's riverside and meadow environment is exceptional.
Port Holme Meadow — 256 acres of traditional flower-rich ridge-and-furrow meadow in the bend of the Great Ouse south of the town — is particularly valuable for the kind of natural-light documentary family photography I do. The flat, open meadow and long grass give a depth-of-field quality that modern portrait photographers associate with Scandinavian editorial photography; access is straightforward for families with young children, and the quiet, car-free environment means relaxed, candid moments happen naturally.
The Chinese Bridge — a delicate, ornate early-nineteenth-century wooden footbridge over the island mill stream that forms the eastern approach to the town — is a beautiful and distinctive portrait location, particularly popular for couple sessions and as a background element in wedding portraits. The towpath south from the bridge to Huntingdon's Old Bridge is one of the most pleasant riverside walks in the area and provides changing light and landscape throughout a session.
Photography Locations
One of England's largest hay meadows, immediately south of the town — an unbroken expanse of traditional ridge-and-furrow pasture beside the Ouse, brilliant for natural-light family sessions.
Godmanchester's famous early-19th-century ornamental wooden bridge provides a distinctive, romantic crossing point over the island mill stream — a memorable portrait backdrop.
The tree-lined towpath and riverbanks between Godmanchester and Huntingdon provide miles of easy, accessible riverside walking for outdoor portrait and family sessions.
Godmanchester's centre has Roman origins and a well-preserved medieval street plan — the timber-framed buildings of Post Street and the Causeway give warm architectural portrait settings.
The 170-acre former Cromwell estate country park — lakes, meadows, and woodland — is a five-minute drive and provides a diverse natural landscape for all seasons.
The adjoining market town of Huntingdon — All Saints Church, the Old Bridge, and the market square — extends portrait options to an urban-historic environment within walking distance.

Common Questions
Port Holme Meadow is exceptional for family and wedding portrait sessions — the open meadow beside the Ouse gives a pastoral English quality that is hard to find so close to a town. The Chinese Bridge and the island mill stream provide romantic portrait settings. The towpath between Godmanchester and Huntingdon is accessible and traffic-free for sessions at any time of year.
Yes — Godmanchester and Huntingdon are separated by the Great Ouse bridge and are effectively a single photographic environment. I am happy to combine locations across both towns in a single session. The Old Bridge at Huntingdon, Hinchingbrooke Country Park, and Hartford riverside are all natural companions to Godmanchester's settings.
I offer wedding photography (full-day and half-day), family documentary sessions, individual and couple portrait sessions, children's photography, headshots for professionals, and commercial photography. Most outdoor sessions use Port Holme Meadow, the Chinese Bridge area, or the riverside; I can also recommend private indoor spaces in Huntingdon for sessions requiring shelter.
A standard family session in Godmanchester is 1.5–2 hours at Port Holme Meadow or the riverside. This comfortably covers the walk between locations, allows time for candid documentary moments, and produces a gallery of around 50–80 images after selection and editing. Sessions longer than 2 hours are available for larger families or those wanting more variety.
