Cornwall has the finest portrait light in England. The Atlantic-facing coastline — from Porthmeor Beach at St Ives to Kynance Cove's serpentine rocks on the Lizard — gives a quality of golden-hour illumination that is unique in Britain. Longer, warmer, softer than anywhere further north or east. Coastal water reflects and multiplies that warmth. The result is portraits with extraordinary richness and depth.
Beyond the coast, Bodmin Moor offers an entirely different quality: ancient granite tors, wild Atlantic sky, and the silence of the far west. I've photographed across Cornwall from Newquay to Land's End — planning each session around the tide, the light, and the particular character of the chosen location. This is portrait photography as it should be.

Questions
What makes Cornwall so good for portrait photography?+
Cornwall has the best light in England — the combination of Atlantic humidity and the far south-westerly latitude means the golden hour lasts longer and the colours are softer and warmer than anywhere else in the country. Coastal locations add the further dimension of reflected light from water. Kynance Cove with its turquoise sea and serpentine rock stacks is genuinely one of the most beautiful portrait locations in the UK.
When is the best time for Cornwall portrait sessions?+
Late May through September are the best months. The light is warmest from 5pm to sunset in summer. For beach sessions the evening is magical — the pools left by the tide reflect the sunset. Kynance Cove requires low tide, so sessions are planned around tide times. Autumn (October–November) also gives extraordinary light on Bodmin Moor, with bracken turning red-gold.
Can we travel between St Ives and Kynance Cove in one session?+
The drive from St Ives to Kynance Cove takes about 50 minutes, so these are best as separate sessions. However an Extended session could combine Porthmeor Beach at St Ives with Penzance Promenade and the St Michael's Mount view — these are much closer together. I plan Extended Cornwall sessions carefully to make the most of the light and travel.
