Durham Cathedral on its sandstone rock above the River Wear is routinely named one of the most beautiful buildings in the world — and the river and wooded bank below it, photographed from Prebends Bridge, is one of the finest portrait settings in England. The morning light from the east, gold on the cathedral's Norman towers, is extraordinary. Beyond the city, County Durham gives you everything from eighteenth-century landscape gardens at Hardwick to the wild moorland and Norse-named valleys of Teesdale.

Yes. The riverbanks below the cathedral along the Wear are public footpaths, freely accessible at all hours. Prebends Bridge, the riverside paths, and the weir are all public land. This is one of the most used portrait locations in County Durham and one of the most beautiful in northern England.

Autumn is exceptional — the broadleaf areas of Hamsterley turn amber and gold from late September, while the forest floor carpets with fallen leaves and low autumn light cuts through the canopy. Spring bluebell season (late April–May) is equally beautiful in the deciduous sections. It photographs well year-round.
