English beaches offer extraordinary variety for family photography — from the vast flat sands of Norfolk to the chalk cliffs of the Jurassic Coast and the wild Atlantic headlands of Cornwall. Coastal light has a quality that's difficult to replicate inland: softer, more diffuse, and with a reflective brightness that flatters everyone.
One of England's most spectacular beaches — vast, unspoiled, and fringed by pine forest. The wide, flat sand and enormous skies create extraordinary natural light. Best in morning or late afternoon when the light is low and warm.
Classic English seaside towns with colourful beach huts, fishing boats, and a distinctly unhurried atmosphere. Aldeburgh's shingle beach has a raw, dramatic quality; Southwold's pier and huts are quintessentially English.
The chalk cliffs are instantly recognisable — and when the grass runs to the cliff edge, family portraits here are extraordinary. Walk down at Birling Gap for access to the beach at the base of the cliffs.
Iconic Jurassic Coast locations with naturally dramatic backdrops — the Durdle Door arch and the circular cove at Lulworth create backgrounds unlike anything else in England. Go early to beat the crowds.
Cornish beaches have a luminous, Mediterranean quality on fine days. St Ives is surrounded by three beaches; Hayle Towans has spectacular dunes perfect for running, jumping, and natural movement shots.
Bamburgh Castle rising from the dunes behind a wide, empty beach — one of the most dramatic settings in the whole of England. The beach is rarely crowded and the castle creates an extraordinary backdrop.
Summer is the obvious choice — warmth, swimwear, and long evenings for extended golden hour sessions. But early autumn (late September to mid-October) is often even better: the light is warmer and lower in the sky, the beaches are quieter, and families aren't overheated and irritable. Late spring (May–June) also produces beautiful light with pleasant temperatures.
Winter and early spring beach sessions have their own appeal — dramatic skies, dramatic seas, and completely empty beaches. Wrap up well and lean into the moody, atmospheric look that overcast coastal days produce.
