Outdoor ceremonies in the Cambridge area have expanded dramatically as couples seek alternatives to traditional church and civil registry ceremonies. As of 2012, licences can be granted for outdoor locations in England and Wales, and a number of Cambridgeshire venues have taken advantage of this rule change to offer ceremonies in walled gardens, formal terraces, lakesides, and parkland. This guide covers the main options, the logistics, and what outdoor ceremonies look like to photograph.
An outdoor ceremony in England requires an approved premises licence or a temporary structure (such as a licensed marquee). The key venues in and around Cambridge that offer genuinely outdoor ceremonies include:
Cambridge's continental-influenced climate makes it one of the sunnier, drier areas of the UK — average annual rainfall is around 570mm compared to the UK national average of 1,150mm. Still, weather contingency is essential for any outdoor ceremony.
No outdoor ceremony in England should be planned without a credible wet-weather alternative. For licensed outdoor venues, this usually means a licensed covered structure such as a permanent or semi-permanent marquee, an orangery, or a barn to fall back on. Confirm with your venue that the outdoor ceremony space and the wet-weather space are both fully licensed for ceremonies.
Photography note: overcast or partly-cloudy weather actually produces better portrait lighting than direct midday sun — soft even light from a bright overcast sky is my preferred outdoor ceremony condition. The only condition that creates significant challenges is heavy continuous rain, so a covered wet-weather option is important primarily for the guests' comfort, not for the photography.
Many Cambridge couples combine an indoor ceremony with outdoor elements: drinks on a terrace or lawn, al fresco dining under a marquee, or evening dancing outdoors. This flexibility is much easier to manage photographically and logistically. Venues with walled gardens or enclosed terrace spaces (sheltered from wind) work best for extended outdoor use on all but the warmest days.
Outdoor ceremonies offer some of the most beautiful wedding photography conditions available — natural light, green surroundings, and space for expansive compositions. I work across Cambridgeshire's outdoor venues regularly and would be glad to discuss the photography logistics for your chosen outdoor space.
