Dartmoor National Park is one of England's finest elopement destinations — a wilderness of granite moorland, ancient Bronze Age stone circles, wooded river valleys, and weather that can change from bright sunshine to dramatic storm to rainbow within the same twenty minutes. For couples who want remoteness, scale, and genuine wildness, Dartmoor delivers.
Dartmoor is one of the few large areas of genuinely open land in southern England where you can be completely alone with a vast sky. The tor summits — Haytor, Hound Tor, Great Mis Tor — give 360-degree views across the moor with nothing man-made on the horizon except stone and heather. Elopements on the open moor require no booking, no venue, and no witness beyond the landscape.
Devon has specific legal provisions: outdoor civil ceremonies can take place in licensed outdoor locations. Several Dartmoor accommodation providers — particularly Two Bridges Hotel and Lewtrenchard Manor — hold licences for outdoor ceremonies, allowing legal elopements within their grounds while retaining the wild character.
Dartmoor's most accessible tor — a double granite summit with views east across Devon to the coast. Park at the National Park car park and walk 15 minutes to the summit. Busy in summer from 10am; arrive before 9am for solitude.
A ruined medieval village below the tor creates a unique archaeological setting — abandoned in the 14th century, the house foundations visible between natural granite outcrops. More atmospheric than Haytor and slightly less visited.
Double Bronze Age stone rows on the open moor above Princetown — walking east from the B3357, entirely alone on the open moor, with the rows stretching into the distance. One of the most eerie and beautiful ancient landscapes in England.
A Victorian reservoir in a forested granite valley near Yelverton — the dam wall, wooded circuit path, and tor skyline combine natural and engineered landscape. Quiet on weekdays outside summer.
Where the East and West Dart rivers meet in a wooded valley below the open moor — stepping stones, oak woodland, and the moor rising above. Particularly beautiful in autumn when the oak canopy turns gold.
Dartmoor weather is famously unpredictable. This is a feature, not a problem. Some of the most extraordinary elopement photographs come from sessions that encounter a moving storm front — the way the mist descends over Haytor, or the rainbow above Hound Tor, or the shafts of light breaking through cloud onto the open moor. Build flexibility into your timing and treat the weather as part of the story rather than an obstacle to it.
