A first look is a planned, private moment between partners before the ceremony — one person stands with their back turned, the other walks up and taps their shoulder, and they turn to see each other in their wedding clothes for the first time. It is one of the most emotionally powerful moments of the day, and one of the most discussed decisions in modern wedding planning. This guide explains exactly what a first look involves, the genuine advantages and the genuine drawbacks, and how to decide whether it is right for your wedding.
Before the first look became widely practised (it grew from a documentary filmmaking technique into mainstream wedding photography in the 2000s–2010s), the standard structure was: ceremony first, couple portraits second, guests waiting during room turnaround third. The first look reverses this — portrait and couple session before the ceremony, during the period when the wedding party is getting ready and guests are arriving. The moment itself is intimate: just the two of you, your photographer, and possibly a videographer.
Some couples do a first look in the hotel room or getting-ready suite, before moving to the venue. Others do a first look for letters or voices only — each writes a letter to be read aloud while standing back-to-back or separated by a door, hearing the other's voice without seeing. This captures emotional content without altering the visual first sight.
I work with couples to structure their wedding day timeline around the approach that feels right for them — first look before the ceremony, or portraits after. Both structures produce beautiful images. Get in touch to discuss what would work for your wedding.
