A professional headshot for women involves thoughtful choices around clothing, makeup, and hair — all of which photograph differently from how they appear in person. Understanding these differences means arriving prepared and leaving with a headshot that genuinely represents you at your professional best.
Clothing Choices
Structured necklines photograph well
V-necks, scoop necks, and tailored collars frame the face cleanly. Avoid turtlenecks which can shorten the neck, and avoid strapless — too casual for most professional contexts.
Jackets and blazers add structure
A fitted jacket or blazer immediately signals formality and professionalism. Works across industries. Remove if the context is more creative or relaxed — the blazer-off look changes the register entirely.
Solid colours over patterns
Florals, prints, and detailed patterns compete with your face for attention. A solid, well-chosen colour photographs cleanly and keeps focus where it should be.
Consider your brand context
A barrister needs a different headshot register than a creative director. Match your outfit to the professional context — ask what feels right for your most important client meeting.
Layering adds visual interest without pattern
A structured jacket over a simple top gives depth without busy detail. Avoid thin single-layer garments which can look flat under studio lighting.
Makeup Guidance
Camera-ready makeup
Makeup that looks natural in person can appear invisible in photographs. For headshots, a slightly more defined makeup look than your daily routine is typically appropriate — it reads as 'natural' in the final image.
Foundation and setting powder
Studio lighting emphasises shine on the skin. A light setting powder reduces this. Your photographer will have powder available if needed, but bringing your own is wise.
