The choice between indoor and outdoor headshots is less about which is objectively better and more about which suits your specific professional context, your industry, and the intended use of the images. Both approaches produce excellent results when handled well.
Indoor sessions typically use controlled lighting — studio flash, LED, or large windows — combined with plain or textured backgrounds. This produces clean, consistent results that work well for corporate and institutional use.
Advantages:
✓Complete control over lighting — consistent, flattering results regardless of weather or time of day
✓Background options — plain coloured backdrops, textured walls, architectural elements — without the unpredictability of outdoor backgrounds
✓No weather dependency — your booking is safe in January or August
✓Consistent look across multiple people — for team headshots, indoor setups produce matching results
✓Better for skin tone accuracy — controlled artificial or window light allows precise colour rendering
Limitations:
○Can read as conventional or corporate if that does not match the client's brand
○Requires access to a suitable indoor space — not all offices or environments provide this
○Natural-light-only indoor locations can be limited and time-dependent
Outdoor sessions use natural light — ideally on overcast days when light is soft and diffused, at golden hour for warmth, or in architectural shade for controlled results. The background becomes part of the image.
Advantages:
✓Softer, more dimensional natural light — particularly on overcast days (which are actually the most flattering for portraits)
✓Background context — a location can communicate something about the person's identity or work context
✓More modern, accessible feeling — less corporate register, often more appropriate for coaches, creatives, and personal brand content
✓For Cambridge and London specifically — beautiful architectural environments available without any studio hire
Limitations:
○Weather dependent — wind, harsh sun, and rain all require replanning or rescheduling
○Harder to achieve consistency for team headshots where matching look matters
○More variables to manage — background changes, passers-by, permission requirements at some locations
○Golden-hour windows are narrow — ideal outdoor light lasts 30–45 minutes and requires careful scheduling
LinkedIn and corporate use
Either works well. Indoor is more consistent; outdoor with a neutral architectural background (brick, stone, glass) has a professional, modern feel that is very common now.
Team or company headshots
Indoor, with a single consistent setup. This produces a matching look across the whole team — critical for company website use.
Personal brand and coaching
Outdoor or mixed — contextual portraits that show you in an environment say more about who you are. A blurred garden or city street background can be appropriate.
Media and speaking profiles
Outdoor environmental portraits often work well — more characterful and less sterile than plain studio looks.
Academic and institutional
Indoor is standard — plain background against a wall, or a softly defocused interior.
Many clients choose to do both within the same session — starting with clean indoor/studio portraits for corporate and team-page use, then moving to a nearby outdoor location for slightly looser, more characterful portraits for LinkedIn and personal brand use. In Cambridge and London, excellent architectural outdoor settings are available within walking distance of almost any indoor setup.
Not sure which setup is right for you?
I discuss setup options with every client before booking — the right choice depends on your industry, your preferred backgrounds, and how the images will be used.
