A child's birthday is one of the most natural moments to commission professional photography — not because birthdays are a legal requirement for portraits, but because they mark a specific, definable moment in time that can be returned to later. "This is what you looked like at 5" is an extraordinary thing to be able to say with a photograph to prove it.
Baby's first encounter with a whole cake, usually timed around the first birthday. A messy, joyful 90-minute session that bookends the first-year milestone series beautifully.
A photographer joins the birthday party and documents the day — the preparations, the arrival of friends, cake candles, opening presents, and the pure energy of children celebrating together. Less posed, more real.
A dedicated portrait session to mark the age milestone — the same child photographed at 1, 2, 3, 5, 10. Simple, direct portraits that track how the same face changes year by year. Some families do this on the birthday itself; others prefer the weekend before.
A session built around something the child loves — their special place, a favourite activity, or a birthday treat. A 7-year-old who loves rivers could have their session at the water; a 10-year-old who loves baking could have theirs in the kitchen.
The difference between a birthday session that produces treasured images and one that produces stiff, performance-faces-for-the-camera is almost entirely about how the photographer works with children. The key principles:
One of the most meaningful uses of children's birthday photography is the annual portrait tradition: a simple, consistent photograph taken on or around each birthday, of the same child in the same place (or similar setting), year on year.
Over a decade, this becomes something extraordinary — the same face at 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, charting the emergence of a person from baby to child to the beginning of adolescence. The value of this archive is impossible to quantify. The cost of creating it is one annual session booking.
Consistency is the point
The annual birthday portrait doesn't need to be elaborate. A simple, well-lit portrait against a neutral background or in beautiful natural light is all you need. The editing consistency, the similarity of location, and the visible growth of the same child are what make the series meaningful — not elaborate themes or changing setups.
Under 3
Tell them nothing in advance — advance warning just creates anxiety. On the day, describe it as 'we're going to play somewhere fun' or let it unfold at the session.
Ages 3–5
Brief, simple, positive framing: 'We're having your birthday photos taken — it will be fun and you can choose your favourite toy to bring.'
Ages 6–10
Children this age can understand and engage with the purpose. 'We're getting photos taken to remember when you were [age].' Many children this age enjoy the idea of looking back.
Teenagers
Involve them in the decision. If they don't want birthday portraits, they'll be impossible to photograph. If they do, they can genuinely collaborate on location, style, and concept.
