A child's birthday is one of the most natural moments to commission professional photography — not because birthdays are a legal requirement for portraits, but because they mark a specific, definable moment in time that can be returned to later. "This is what you looked like at 5" is an extraordinary thing to be able to say with a photograph to prove it.

What makes birthday photography work — regardless of type

The difference between a birthday session that produces treasured images and one that produces stiff, performance-faces-for-the-camera is almost entirely about how the photographer works with children. The key principles:

• ◆Let children lead: Particularly from age 4 onwards, children who are given some control over the session — where to walk, what to do next, which silly face to pull — produce far more natural results than children who are posed and told what to do.
• ◆Timing matters enormously: A tired child or a hungry child is a different proposition from a well-rested, recently-fed child. For morning birthday sessions, schedule after breakfast. For afternoon sessions, schedule after nap and before the hunger window before dinner.
• ◆Don't over-schedule: A 90-minute session with a 3-year-old will contain about 15–20 minutes of genuine magic and the rest of your money will be spent trying to re-engage them. A 45-minute session with a 3-year-old that starts on time and works with their attention span produces better results.
• ◆Familiar environments: Children are more relaxed in familiar places — their own home, their favourite park, the garden. If you have a choice between a spectacular unknown location and their familiar local park, the local park often wins.
• ◆Party documentation requires trust: If you're photographing an actual birthday party, the photographer needs to be someone who can become invisible in the space — someone children and adults stop noticing within about 10 minutes. Ask to see previous party documentation work before booking.

The annual birthday portrait tradition

One of the most meaningful uses of children's birthday photography is the annual portrait tradition: a simple, consistent photograph taken on or around each birthday, of the same child in the same place (or similar setting), year on year.

Over a decade, this becomes something extraordinary — the same face at 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, charting the emergence of a person from baby to child to the beginning of adolescence. The value of this archive is impossible to quantify. The cost of creating it is one annual session booking.
