Mini sessions and full photography sessions are structured quite differently — in timing, output, cost, and what they're designed for. Neither is universally better; each suits specific situations. Here's a clear breakdown of what you actually get with each, and how to decide which is right for your family.
Mini sessions are short, focused sessions — typically 20–30 minutes — at a predetermined location on a specific date. They're usually offered in batches: a photographer books 6–10 families into the same location on the same day, with 20–30 minute slots separated by short gaps. The backdrop, lighting, and location are fixed for all clients on that day.
Mini sessions typically include fewer final images (10–25 is common) and have a reduced price relative to full sessions. They work well for specific purposes: seasonal portraits (Christmas, autumn), bluebell season sessions, specific occasion portraits.
A full family portrait session typically runs 60–90 minutes for a standard session or up to 2 hours for larger families. The date, time, and location are chosen for you specifically — around your schedule, your children's nap times, the best light at your preferred location. The photographer gives the session their complete attention: more creative options, more locations within the same site, more time for children to warm up, more outfit changes if planned.
Full sessions produce larger galleries: 40–80+ final edited images is typical, depending on family size and session length. The investment is higher but the output is proportionally larger, and the experience is tailored rather than shared across multiple clients.
| Factor | Mini Session | Full Session |
|---|---|---|
| Duration | 20–30 minutes | 60–90 minutes |
| Scheduling flexibility | Shared date/time slot | Your preferred date, time, season |
| Location choice | Fixed (same for all clients) | Your choice within photographer's coverage |
| Final images delivered | 10–25 typically | 40–80+ |
| Outfit changes | Usually not practical | 1–2 changes possible |
| Children warm-up time | Very limited | Plenty of time to relax |
| Investment | Lower (£80–£200 typical) | Higher (£250–£500+ typical) |
| Personalisation | Limited | Fully personalised |
Mini sessions work beautifully for cooperative children and calm families — and can be genuinely stressful with toddlers. A 20-minute session means there's almost no recovery time if a child has a meltdown in the first 10 minutes. If your children are under 4, unpredictable, or need time to warm up to a camera, a full session with a longer, more relaxed approach almost always produces better results — and a much more enjoyable experience. Many photographers will tell you honestly if a mini session is likely to be a poor fit for your family's situation.
I offer both seasonal mini sessions and full family portrait sessions in Cambridge and the surrounding countryside. Mini sessions run in spring (bluebell season), summer, and autumn. Full sessions are available year-round at locations across Cambridgeshire, East England, and beyond. Get in touch to discuss which works best for your family.
