The River and Bridges

• ◆The Backs: The stretch of parkland and riverbank behind the Colleges of King's, Queen's, Clare, Trinity, and St John's is the defining Cambridge view. The combination of reflected college architecture in the Cam, weeping willows, and punts creates images that feel quintessentially English. Best at golden hour in summer or in early morning mist in autumn.
• ◆King's Backs (King's College): The view of King's College Chapel across the meadow from The Backs is one of the most iconic architectural views in England. The long horizontal lawn, the perpendicular gothic chapel, and the sky above it create a natural frame that works in all seasons.
• ◆Clare Bridge: The oldest surviving bridge in Cambridge, dating to 1640. The stone balls on the parapets and the arches reflected in the Cam make it one of the most graceful riverside settings in the city. Quiet early mornings here are genuinely beautiful.

• ◆Sidgwick Site in autumn: The modern architecture of the Sidgwick humanities faculties is surrounded by mature beech trees that turn spectacular copper and amber in October. An unusual setting that contrasts contemporary buildings with ancient woodland colour.
