One of the most common questions I hear from couples planning their wedding is: "Should we have our portraits outside or inside?" The honest answer is — it depends. Both have genuine advantages, and the best photographers will make either location work beautifully.
England's countryside, gardens, and coastline provide some of the most naturally beautiful backdrops in the world. Natural light — especially during golden hour — flatters skin tones and creates a warmth that artificial lighting rarely matches.
Outdoor portraits feel expansive, romantic, and timeless. A couple walking through a wildflower meadow or standing against a hedgerow at dusk is an image that needs no explanation — it simply breathes.
Indoor venues offer predictability and control. A beautiful country house dining room, a stately library, or an elegant drawing room lit with candles and fairy lights can produce images every bit as stunning as any outdoor setting.
Indoor photography also solves the weather problem entirely — and for winter weddings, it's often the warmer, more practical choice. The key is finding a venue with large windows that allow natural light to pour in, supplemented by a skilled photographer who understands artificial light.
Most weddings benefit from a combination of indoor and outdoor photography. I typically shoot bridal preparations, ceremony, and first dances indoors — then take the couple outside during golden hour for 20–30 minutes of portrait time when the light is at its most beautiful.
This approach gives you the intimacy of indoor candid shots alongside the romance of outdoor portraits. You get the best of both worlds without relying on either exclusively.
Ask yourself three questions:
When we meet for your pre-wedding consultation, I'll look at your specific venue and help you plan a timeline that gets the most from wherever you are — whatever the weather does.
