The waiting period after your wedding — when you know the photos exist somewhere but can't yet see them — is one of the stranger experiences of early married life. This guide explains exactly what happens between your wedding day and the moment your online gallery lands in your inbox: how long it takes, what the gallery contains, how to download your images, and what to do once you have them.
Professional wedding photographers typically deliver galleries within four to twelve weeks of your wedding date. The exact timeline depends on the time of year and how busy the editing schedule is. Summer and autumn weddings — the peak season — often sit at the longer end of this range. A photographer who commits to six weeks and delivers at week ten has not done anything wrong; the post-production workload for a full wedding day is genuinely substantial.
A typical wedding shoot produces between 2,000 and 4,000 raw files. From these, a photographer selects and edits 400–800 images for delivery. Each image requires individual colour grading, exposure adjustment, and sometimes skin retouching. At a conservative ten minutes per image, that is 70–130 hours of editing work — often squeezed around other weddings and portrait sessions happening in parallel.
Your contract will state a maximum delivery window. If that date passes without communication, a polite email is entirely appropriate. If your photographer has gone completely silent well past their stated deadline, escalate quickly — this situation, while rare, does occasionally happen.
Most UK wedding photographers deliver via purpose-built gallery platforms — Pixieset, Shootproof, Pic-Time, and similar services. You will receive an email with a link and sometimes a password. The gallery itself is a clean, scrollable grid of your images, usually grouped into sections: Getting Ready, Ceremony, Portraits, Reception, and so on.
Image counts vary. A ten-hour wedding day with a single photographer typically yields 400–600 finished images. With a second photographer or a videography team capturing less-covered angles, you may receive 600–900. Numbers significantly below 300 for a full day should prompt a conversation with your photographer.
The gallery will usually include a download button — either to download everything at once or to select individual images. Download sizes can be large: 600 images at full resolution may total 3–6 GB. Make sure you have enough free storage on your device before clicking download all.
Your gallery will offer images at different sizes. Full-resolution files (typically 4,000–8,000 pixels wide, 5–20 MB each) are for printing — they contain all the detail your camera captured and will produce sharp results at any reasonable print size including large wall art. Web-resolution versions (typically 1,500–2,500 pixels wide, 300–800 KB each) are for sharing online, social media, and email — they load quickly and look beautiful on screens but will look soft or pixelated if printed larger than roughly 15 × 10 cm.
Always download the full-resolution files and store them safely. The web-resolution versions are convenient for day-to-day sharing, but the full-resolution files are your master archive and cannot be recreated if your photographer's copies are lost.
Most gallery platforms host images for between six months and two years. Some photographers offer lifetime hosting; others archive the gallery after a set period. Read your contract for the specific terms. The safest approach is always to download your full gallery to your own devices promptly — do not rely on the photographer's platform as your long-term storage solution.
If you have family members or guests who want access, most gallery platforms allow you to share the link directly. The gallery owner (your photographer) controls whether guest downloads are enabled — check this with them if you want others to download images rather than just view them.
Most photographers are open to reasonable requests — if your ceremony exit isn't in the gallery but you remember it happening, it's worth asking. However, the images delivered represent the photographer's professional selection. Very dark, blurry, or technically unusable frames are typically excluded even if they capture a meaningful moment, and a blanket request for "all the raw files" is generally not something professional photographers accommodate.
If you would like edits made to specific images — removing a background object, adjusting a colour, lightening a dark corner — this is usually possible at an additional cost. Most photographers include minor adjustments as a courtesy; more involved retouching is typically priced separately.
