A family beach photography session along the Suffolk or Norfolk coast is one of the most atmospheric and visually rewarding sessions you can book — but the setting is more demanding than a park or garden. Sand, sea, wind, and the vast natural palette of the British coast create a specific visual world, and what your family wears either enhances that world or competes with it. This guide will help you choose clothing that looks genuinely beautiful against the estuary, the dunes, and the open horizon.
📋 In this guide:
The British coastline has a specific colour world: bleached dune grasses, grey-green sea, taupe sand, slate skies, white foam, and the rich blues of a clear summer day. Clothing colours that sit beautifully within this palette:
White and cream
The most classic beach family palette — luminous against sea and sand, particularly in golden hour light. Genuinely beautiful and easy to coordinate across all ages.
Natural linen tones
Oatmeal, stone, buff, and warm beige. These warm neutrals sit harmoniously against sand and create images with an organic, natural quality.
Sage and eucalyptus greens
Soft green tones echo the coastal grasses and vegetation. Not too vivid — muted, desaturated greens work best.
Terracotta and rust
Warm orange-earth tones create a beautiful complementary contrast against blues and greens of sea and sky. Particularly effective in late afternoon golden light.
Soft navy
A restrained, muted navy (not bright blue) that references the sea without trying to match it. Works well as an accent alongside neutrals.
Dusty pink and blush
Soft, warm pinks feel romantic in a coastal setting, especially at golden hour. Works particularly well for mother and daughter coordination.
Avoid bright, saturated blues — the instinct to "match the sea" is very common but the result in photographs is that family members visually merge with the background and become harder to distinguish. The irony is that not matching the sea creates more beautiful and distinct photographs.
The beach is a genuinely demanding environment for clothing. Fabric choices matter:
A flowing midi or maxi dress or skirt in a coastal-appropriate fabric is the most photographically effective choice — the movement created by sea wind is one of the defining visual qualities of beach photography. Linen or cotton gauze in white, cream, sage, or terracotta.
If dresses are not your style: linen trousers and a relaxed shirt or linen blouse work beautifully. Confidence in your clothing choice always reads better in photographs than discomfort in the "right" choice.
Linen trousers or chino-style trousers in a neutral tone — oatmeal, stone, soft white, or khaki — with a linen or cotton shirt in a complementary palette. Rolled sleeves read as relaxed and appropriate. Tailored shorts for a summer session (but shorts must be tailored, not board shorts). The key is relaxed, natural, and in-palette with the rest of the family's choices.
Children's clothing on the beach should balance two considerations: being in-palette with the family aesthetic, and being practical enough that children can actually move, play, and be themselves during the session (which is exactly what produces the most beautiful family photographs).
Beach footwear is a genuine practical consideration. The best options:
Barefoot
The most beautiful choice photographically for sandy beach sessions. Hands and feet in contact with the natural environment read as completely natural and unposed.
Simple leather or cork sandals
Flat sandals that can be removed easily for sand sections and worn for walking on harder surfaces. Nothing too elaborate.
White plimsoles or simple canvas shoes for children
Practical and easy — children in white or neutral shoes coordinate with almost any family palette.
Avoid heels of any kind on a beach. Even wedge heels are impractical and create tension that reads in photographs. The most confident-looking people in beach photographs are those who are genuinely comfortable and grounded in their footwear.
Holkham Beach, Norfolk
One of England's most beautiful beaches — wide, wild, and backed by pine forest. An approximately 1.5h drive from Cambridge. The sheer width of the beach creates extraordinary visual scale in photographs.
Brancaster Beach, Norfolk
Quieter and more remote than Holkham — excellent for families wanting a more private session. Beautiful tidal flats and horizon views.
Southwold, Suffolk
Approx 1h 20min from Cambridge. The colourful beach huts provide a wonderful optional photographic element — vivid but contained. The town's pier and seafront area add variety.
Walberswick / Dunwich, Suffolk
More remote and wild in character than Southwold — beautiful heathland and dune settings with genuine isolation. Approx 1h 30min from Cambridge.
Wells-next-the-Sea, Norfolk
The famous beach hut beach at Wells is particularly beautiful for families — the huts add warmth and character in an otherwise natural setting.
Family beach photography from Cambridge
On-location family photography sessions along the Suffolk and Norfolk coast — natural, unhurried, and beautifully documented.
