Derbyshire has some of the most spectacular natural scenery in England — and I have spent years learning exactly where the light falls at what time of year, which paths are manageable with a buggy, and where a family of five can walk for 40 minutes and produce 40 photographs worth framing.
My approach is documentary: I follow your family as they walk, explore, and interact — I direct occasionally but photograph mostly what is actually happening. The resulting images capture your children as they genuinely are, at this exact age, in this exact Derbyshire landscape.

The most varied landscapes in England
Limestone dales, gritstone edges, ancient woodland, moorland plateau, country estates — Derbyshire contains more photographic variety per square mile than almost anywhere in England.
Light that works all year
The Peak District's high ground catches the best of the day's light. At golden hour in the dales, Chatsworth Park or Padley Gorge, the quality of light is consistent and extraordinary.
Natural children in natural places
Children are easier to photograph in places they are actually enjoying. The Peak District gives them rocks to scramble, water to throw stones in, and paths to run along — and I photograph all of it.
Images that belong to Derbyshire
A family photograph at Stanage Edge or in the Dovedale gorge is specifically and irreversibly set in Derbyshire. It documents not just your family but the landscape that shaped your family life.
Locations
Peak District
Derbyshire's crown — Stanage Edge, Mam Tor, the Dovedale gorge, Chatsworth Park, and Padley Gorge are among the finest family portrait locations in England. Moorland, woodland, limestone valleys, and ancient estates within a 45-minute drive of most of the county.
Matlock & Matlock Bath
The Derwent Valley above Matlock offers extraordinary woodland and riverside portrait settings — Riber Castle on the ridge above Matlock is particularly dramatic. The Heights of Abraham woodland is beautiful in all seasons.
Bakewell & the Dales
Bakewell is the heart of the Peak District dales — the Wye Valley above Bakewell, Monsal Dale and its viaduct, and the deep limestone gorges of Lathkill Dale provide outstanding natural backdrops.
Derby & South Derbyshire
City-based family sessions in Derby and the Trent Valley — Elvaston Castle Country Park, Foremark Reservoir, and Calke Abbey all provide excellent natural backdrops within easy reach of Derby.
For young children, I prefer locations with accessible terrain — Chatsworth Park, Padley Gorge near Grindleford, and the Dovedale stepping stones at Thorpe are all beautiful and manageable with small children. For older families, Stanage Edge and Mam Tor offer more dramatic moorland settings.
Each season has a distinct character. Spring offers fresh green and bluebell woodland. Summer provides long golden evenings in the dales. Autumn transforms Padley Gorge and the estate woodlands with extraordinary colour. Winter on the moorland is stark and beautiful. I recommend avoiding midday summer light — evening sessions are far better.
I factor location into the session planning. Most Peak District locations are 20–45 minutes from Derby or Sheffield. I recommend arriving 15 minutes before your session time. For moorland locations, comfortable, closed-toe footwear is essential.
Yes — overcast light is often better for family portraits than harsh sun, which creates unflattering shadows. Soft rain can be beautiful. I only reschedule in severe weather (high winds, heavy continuous rain). I always have a rescheduling plan and contact you 48 hours ahead if conditions look problematic.
Dogs are always welcome for outdoor Derbyshire sessions — they are often the best-behaved members of the family. I adapt the session flow to include them naturally rather than forcing separate posed shots.
