A family photography session is a completely different experience from a formal portrait sitting — and knowing what to expect from every stage makes the difference between a stressful afternoon and a session your children actually enjoy. Here is everything you need to know, from the first enquiry through to receiving your gallery.

Step 1 — Booking the Session

When you contact a family photographer, be ready to share the following:

• ◆Approximate ages of all children (this affects how the session is structured and how long it should be)
• ◆Whether you have a location in mind or would like suggestions
• ◆The season or rough date range you are considering
• ◆Your preferred style — formal and posed, documentary and candid, or a mix

Most family sessions are 60–90 minutes. With babies or toddlers under two, 60 minutes is usually better — attention spans are short and sessions that run long produce tired, unhappy expressions in the final third.

Step 2 — Choosing Your Location

Location makes a significant difference to the feel of the final images. The best family photography locations share a few characteristics:

• ◆Natural light without harsh direct sun: Open parkland, woodland edges, and riverside paths all provide soft, directional light that flatters everyone. Avoid locations where you will be in full midday sun — harsh overhead light creates unflattering shadows.
• ◆Room for children to move: Children photograph best when they are moving — running, exploring, playing. A location with space to move produces infinitely better images than one where everyone is constrained.
• ◆Something interactive nearby: A pond to throw stones in. Ducks to look at. A meadow to run through. When children have something to focus on, they stop performing for the camera — and that is when the real photographs happen.

Step 3 — Choosing What to Wear

The goal is coordinated without being identical. A few principles:

• ◆Choose a colour palette of 3–4 complementary tones rather than matching outfits
• ◆Neutral and earthy tones (cream, sage, dusty blue, warm grey, terracotta) age well and photograph across all seasons
• ◆Avoid large logos, bright white (which can overexpose), or heavily patterned clothing

• ◆Check that outfits work for outdoor movement: children will run, roll, and possibly sit in grass

Step 4 — Preparing Your Children

• ◆Bring something they love: A favourite toy, a ball, a bag of snacks. These are not bribes but tools — something for children to hold, interact with, or focus on naturally.
• ◆Do not instruct them to smile: Instructed smiles are always visible in photographs. A laughing child, a running child, a child absorbed in something — these always produce better images than a posed one.
• ◆Let them lead some of the session: When a child feels some ownership over the session — a direction they wanted to walk, a spot they chose — they engage more naturally.

Step 5 — What Happens During the Session

A typical 60-minute outdoor family session covers:

• ◆5–10 minutes of casual introductions and acclimatisation while walking to the first location
• ◆20–30 minutes of photographing the children naturally — playing, exploring, interacting
• ◆15–20 minutes of couple photographs and family group moments with gentle direction
• ◆10 minutes of quieter, more intentional portrait moments with the children settled

The exact balance depends entirely on the children. A good family photographer adjusts continuously — leading the session loosely rather than following a script. Session flow is guided by the children, not imposed upon them.

Step 6 — Receiving Your Gallery

After your session, your photographer will edit the images and deliver the final gallery. Typical delivery timelines range from 2–4 weeks. Your gallery will include:
