Family formal photographs are the part of the wedding day most likely to overrun. Getting them right — and getting them done quickly — requires planning before the day and clear organisation in the moment. Here is exactly how long they take and how to keep them on schedule.
A realistic time budget for family formals is 3–4 minutes per group combination, including calling people, positioning them, and taking the photographs. This allows for two or three slightly different shots per group and accounts for the inevitable delay of gathering people.
| Number of Group Combinations | Realistic Time Required |
|---|---|
| 6–8 groups | 25–35 minutes |
| 10–12 groups | 40–50 minutes |
| 15 groups | 55–65 minutes |
| 20+ groups | 75+ minutes — consider whether all are essential |
The most common cause of overrun is people not knowing they are needed. Guests wander off to the bar, visit the toilet, start conversations. Every minute spent searching for someone is a minute not photographing. Designate a family coordinator — a trusted person who knows both families and can round people up — and brief them in advance on the running order.
Shoot in order of size, starting with the largest group and working down. This means you can release people progressively rather than trying to keep everyone assembled throughout.
The optimal placement is immediately after the ceremony while guests are assembled in one place. If you wait until after the drinks reception, guests have dispersed, some will have started eating, and gathering them takes significantly longer.
Schedule formals to conclude at least 90 minutes before sunset so your couple portrait session can use golden hour light. If formals overrun, it is typically the couple portraits that lose time — and those are the images most couples treasure most.
