Wedding Album Guide: Types, Sizes, Materials and How to Order

Your wedding album is the physical object that will represent your day for the rest of your lives — and the object most likely to outlast every digital format that currently exists. Proper wedding albums — printed on archival photographic paper, bound in genuine leather or premium materials, professionally designed — are heirloom objects. USB drives fail. Cloud accounts close. Types of Wedding Albums

• ◆Flush-mount (layflat) albums: The most popular format for contemporary wedding albums. Pages are printed as one continuous image — the photograph spans across the full double-page spread without a gutter interruption in the middle. This is essential for panoramic couple portraits and ceremony wide shots. The pages are thick and rigid (mounted on foam or aluminium substrate), and the album lies completely flat when open.
• ◆Traditional matted albums: Individual prints mounted in white window mats within the album pages. A more classic, formal presentation — each image has its own distinct frame and white space around it. Suits a more traditional wedding aesthetic.
• ◆Coffee table books (press-printed): Printed using commercial offset printing rather than true photographic printing. Most professional photographers handle the album design — they select the images, design the spreads, and present a draft for the couple to review. Changes are typically allowed in 1–2 rounds of revisions. The timeline from ordering to delivery depends on the supplier: 4–10 weeks is typical for handmade Italian albums. Some photographers offer a design service included in the album price; others charge separately.

When to Order Your Album

Do not leave album ordering indefinitely. The most common wedding photography regret expressed by couples is not ordering an album because they never got around to it — and then, years later, wishing they had. Practical advice: order the album as soon as your gallery is delivered. Decision-making is sharpest when the wedding is recent.
